When You Feel Like Giving Up

It’s easy to start something. It usually sparks excitement to experience something new. After reading the book Grit by Angela Duckworth, I’ve learned that it’s actually a necessary human trait to crave something interesting. It is what allows babies to progress and learn, otherwise, they would essentially cease to explore and their development would be delayed. Wanting excitement is a basic need in our human species.

The problem begins when we fail to realize that nothing stays new and exciting forever, making it easy to want to ditch it and move on to something else, and start the cycle over again. This natural instinct makes the concept of commitment rather hard, especially when obstacles arise.

You should know that when challenges come up, that doesn’t mean that you’re on the wrong path. In fact, I would worry if you didn’t face challenges. They have purpose, and benefit you in these ways:

  1. You get the opportunity to take a step back and determine if what you are chasing is what you really want. You get to decide if the pain is worth going through. If your answer is yes, you are on to something…
  2. You get to see how strong you really are, and prove to yourself that you have what it takes to get through anything.
  3. You grow in faith and lean on God, ripening your relationship and dependence on Him.

“…we [can] rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” Romans 5:3-4

Committing ourselves to something means that we are character building. We are refining ourselves so that we can face life instead of always being tempted to run away. Life doesn’t come without its challenges, and if we always take the easy way out by quitting and starting something else, we never truly train ourselves to overcome pain, just to avoid it.

This is where surrendering our will to God’s will sets us free.

Pray about it and ask for discernment; take action and do your best; surrender to God; let life happen.

When you feel like quitting, remember that nothing is impossible with God. You can do ANYTHING you set your mind to, and if it is God’s will for you, I PROMISE you it WILL happen. Don’t lose hope. Hope is what we should cling to. Keep fighting. You’ve got this!

Sending hugs,

  • Jess 🙂
